Tech Thursday describes my day. We’re having a revival starting Saturday – Fall Family Olympics. There will be a 5 family competition of ‘Minute to Win It’ to kick it off. We won’t be there for the Saturday service. Mr. H’s family has planned a family reunion for that day and since we were the ones who always complain that we can’t come if they’re on Sunday, we will be attending this one. It’s the first for the SIL. I can’t wait for him to meet that side of the family!
Are y’all coming to Pearl Park this year? I enjoyed the family reunion the year I crashed, er, attended….
Hello everyone and Happy Thursday :)
MrsH both activities sound fun this Saturday. It is good that some families still have family to get together. I know there are a few on both sides of mine but you would never get them together.
Marshall safe travels.
MsB that wedding will be here in a blink of an eye. I hope all goes well.
Leagle, I’d invite you to come, but this one is in Crystal Springs and I have no idea exactly where Mr. H’s aunt lives. His mom has 2 remaining sisters, the youngest passed away about 6 years ago from lung cancer. Their mom, Mr. H’s grandmother, will be there, I’m sure. I think she’s 92 now and still going strong. She has her youngest grandson, a senior at MSU, living with her during the summer and he comes home for holidays and such during the rest of the year. She’s a peach.
LOL!!! I should have read a little further down before I commented above, but I’m still drinking coffee and trying to pry my eyelids open.
Mornin!
Traffic was crazy this morning! But, I made it in safely.
Y’all have a good one.
Mornin. We’ll be having the big 100th birthday party for my grandmother this Saturday. Her birthday is the 19th. I’ll be over there for lunch with her that day. Then I’ll go out with hubby that evening for our 25th wedding anniversary. Gonna be a busy day.
My brother and his family from Alabama will be here for the party Saturday. We haven’t seen them in a couple of years. They always go to Kentucky to her family for holidays.
Good morning. I was disgusted with today’s editorial in the Clarion-Ledger. If the young man who covered the Rankin County Board of Supervisors meeting had any institutional knowledge, he would have reported facts rather than his opinion. It is true that the Board voted not to increase the millage rate then changed direction later that afternoon. Yes, that is true. But….what wasn’t reported is that due to a new law which came into effect in July, the Boards cannot conduct business as they have in the past. The normal way of doing things is to have public comment, then meet on another day to take action on issues. It doesn’t matter whether it’s the budget or zoning issues. That’s normal throughout the levels of government in Mississippi. The Supervisors thought the process would be the same this year. But no, the law changed and says they must take a vote the same day they have public hearings on the budget. If the Board had attempted to do otherwise, they would have to re-advertise the issue and hold another budget hearing. There wasn’t time to do that and pass a budget within the time table set by law.
So, they took a vote and then told the citizens attending the meeting that the issue had not been finalized and encouraged them to stay. But the citizens left anyway. I stayed.
At that time the Board sought to see which budgets they could cut and still provide needed services to the citizens of Rankin County. When they became deadlocked, it was decided to break for a few hours to give the staff an opportunity to look deeper into the situation. The Board reconvened at 3 pm and heard from the staff. One thing was brought out that had not been discussed earlier is the county government has been making cuts for the past three years. If there was to be no tax increase, then leaky roofs would not be fixed, road projects would have to cease in mid-construction, the computer system would probably go down, employees would have to be laid off, the Sheriff would not have enough cars to adequately provide services, and the jail could lapse into the condition of the Hinds County Jail. In addition, the reserve funds have been used to make up shortfalls over the past three years and is close to being so low, the county’s bond rating would be lowered. After looking at all the possible cuts, it was decided more cuts were not possible if they were to continue to provide a level of service expected by the citizens of the county.
So a motion was made to reconsider the vote where the budget had been adopted. After much more discussion and questioning of the staff, the Board voted to increase the millage rate. One supervisor, who has never voted for a tax increase and who never will vote for an increase regardless of the circumstances, continued his course of voting against the motion. He is the only one not living in the real world.
In my opinion, the biggest mistake the Board made was not telling the public of the drastic cuts that had already been made. Had the public been adequately informed, I think the view would have been different. But, without facts in hand, the public, including me, testified against the millage increase. After acquiring the facts, I support the Board’s actions.
I think you should submit this to the C-L as a Letter to the Editor.
Do it, OB.
LOL!!! you made my day! LOL!!! This comment OB
“One supervisor, who has never voted for a tax increase and who never will vote for an increase regardless of the circumstances, continued his course of voting against the motion. He is the only one not living in the real world.”
Now, if you would substitute Aldermen for supervisor, that tells the tale of the board meeting I’m about to attend this afternoon. LOL!!! I’ve gotta let my editor see that comment. hee hee hee
Lets see…PQ is out of town. I’ve got six cans of King Oscar sardines in olive oil in the cabinet, beer in the basement fridge, and green onions in the veggie bin. I think I’m going to have that for lunch today with some club crackers. ;~) The cats will be hoping for leftovers. I’ll give them the juice from the cans.
They will love you forever, even if they ignore you!!!
I give our cats the juice from the tuna and salmon cans.
OB the cars will be your best friends for a little while:)
BLT for me today.
Cats not cars
The church staff had a lunch out today. One of our church members was there with her family and we all stopped to say hello on the way to our table. When we got ready to leave, she had already paid the check for our entire table. Thank you, T, and thank You, Lord, for such generosity.
And just in case you’re interested, an update from Baby Jane’s Page:
“Baby Jane has her first pediatrician’s appointment this morning. We’re excited to meet the doctors. Right now, Jane needs no special care except what you give every newborn which is a blessing from God. She’s eating great! 2 ounces at a time and we’re thinking she wants more so hopefully she’s gained a little weight and we’ll increase her feedings. She sure seems to enjoy stinking up plenty of diapers for Mama and Daddy! Thanks for your continued prayers.”
Wow! Both of these subjects makes cold chills pop out on my arms realizing how blessed we truly are.
Both of these are wonderful MrsH.
I came to work ready to get started on Tech Thursday early. Change of plans: it quickly became apparent that it was going to be a safari morning. We have seen signs of mice in the fellowship hall (where my office is.) I set out 2 glue traps last night before I went home. When I came in there was only one to be found. I got a flashlight because I didn’t want to wait until my nose led me to it. I finally found the EMPTY trap under some shelves. NO MORE MRS. NICE-GUY!! There are now spring loaded traps smeared with peanut butter in my corners. Watch out, you rodents!
Hey MrsH, I know you live by an open field or make that your church lives by an open field, if you want to keep the mice away go to the drugstore and get some peppermint oil.
Put it on cotton balls and stick them in the pantry under said shelves, in your office etc etc. Mice HATE it. I promise they won’t return. I helped my sister clean out mice “evidences” years ago from her pantry and we put the peppermint oil out and she didn’t have them all winter. that’s a sign we are going to have an early winter if they are already moving in. I have a barrier of cats at my house.
Oh, and I forgot to tell you: I got to be a substitute grandmother this morning, too. One little girl’s grandparents couldn’t come today, so I got to be the sub during milk and cookies with the grandparents. She knows me and likes to play with the toys in my office so I don’t think she was too disappointed. She talked the whole time and we got to have our picture taken together.
One of our bridge players today said she had to go to 2 grandparents day activities (at 2 different schools) yesterday. It must be grandparents week.
MrsH I became side tracked from what I should be doing and went to your blog spot. The two startings for quilts are beautiful. I hope you or you have someone to complete them. I have some hand worked items from some of my deceased elder members, but was not blessed to own a beautiful hand made quilt. Such wonderful memories.
Well, I had a couple that my grandmother made and when I was in San Antonio, Gigalo Johnny managed to sell those along with my Gorham silver service for 12, and everything else of value that I owned while I was at work. I think if he hadn’t already been dead a couple of years later, I would have gone over there and deaded him myself just for my grandmother’s quilts.
Evening, hope everyone is doing ok.
evening. really thought i posted this morning. went ate lunch with my oldest nephew then stayed and help with the pto popcorn party. busy and good to get out of the house.
i then went and got shower gifts for this weekend. got all wrapped. havent made any chocolate tonight.. just worn out.. will work on it tomorrow.
everyone have a good night.
Blues and AW are AWOL today. Hope AW is doing better.
I agree OB.
“…deaded him myself…..” Leagle, I love that term!
PM, I have a friend at church who is a member of the local quilting guild. She is my go to expert on quilting matters. She’s going to come look at them and see what still needs to be done.
Baby Jane is back up to her birth weight after losing a bit right at the beginning. I don’t know many babies that don’t have that first dip. She is just fine except that they took blood which is never pleasant, no matter how old you are. So many “normals” are such a blessing. Her parents were expecting to have had a funeral by now! Every day is a cause for celebration.
I finished a market bag tonight. It’s a net-like bag that a friend asked me to help her with when she started hers, so I figured I’d better see what it involved. Mine is made almost entirely of leftover cotton yarn from dishcloth and potholder projects. It’s blue, orange, pink, purple, and mint green. Oh, there is also some black (purchased for this project) which is at the top and handle. I thought the white that I already had would get grubby looking if used for the handle. I’ll try to post pictures tomorrow.
