CARTOON: The weight loss method

I’ll be the first to say that this country needs to tighten its belt.  But cutting ways for people who want an education is shooting ourselves in the foot.

  1. There is no free lunch though. By increasing Pell Grants for other people, it takes money away from me and my family.

  2. Marshall Ramsey says:

I’ve never thought of it that way. I thought allowing others to get an education would improve life in this country and help my family. I guess I need to think differently.

What’s better? Encouraging folks to take advantage of the Gov’t dole or self reliance. I took a Pell grant once but only because it was offered. If it hadn’t been offered I would have found another way. I just wonder if weaning people off reliance on Gov’t is a better way to go?

    We’re doomed. Hello, idiocracy!

  5. Marshall Ramsey says:

Wow, enabling motivated , talent people to go and be able to get an education is “the dole?” I guess you’d prefer just giving them welfare when they can’t get a job.

I just don’t see pell grants as fostering a system of government reliance. I see it a as a helping hand leading toward self reliance. It’s an investment in someone that is designed to help them provide for themselves instead of spending the rest of their life on a government check. Besides, there aren’t exactly a lot of jobs out there for people to earn money they can apply towards education. If there ever was a time we needed to invest in education, it’s now.

I didn’t get a pell grant, but I sure as heck got a lot of scholarship money from state and national programs. Assuming I don’t check out tomorrow, I think I will have been a pretty good investment when it’s all said and done. I didn’t graduate and assume I’d just keep on getting government checks. That pesky education somebody else paid for seemed to have paid off.

Cutting Pell Grants will allow banks to offer more loans to students, and we all know how well banks manage loans (tongue placed firmly in cheek).
