    Mornin!

About to attempt the phone upgrade again. Maybe it’ll work this morning.

Mawnin’ gang. Settled on a carpet and carpet pad. That’s done. Still looking at woods.

Had an awful experience with Niaspan last evening. The cardiologist’s nurse-practician prescribed it for me to help increase my good cholesterol. I’ll never take that again and I’ll never fill another prescription from a nurse-practician unless the Doctor’s name is on the prescription. Shoulda known when she told me to take a low dose asprin thirty minutes before taking the other. I questioned her on that because I already take an anti-coagulant and aspirin is a no-no to mix with that. But…she said it would be OK.

Well it ain’t OK. That stuff disabled me for an hour and a half. I couldn’t sit up, I couldn’t stand up and my whole body felt like fire ants were attacking me. It took 2 and a half hours to totally wear off. And she wants me to do this every evening?

    I don’t think so Sista.

OB, taking aspirin 30 minutes prior to Niacin of any kind is to prevent side effects. Look it up-Niacin is notorious for causing hot flashes, pouring sweat..basically being thrown into full-blown menopausal symptoms for a little while. After you take the Niacin for a week or two, the side-effects subside. I actually would have suggested a non-coated 325mg aspirin 30 minutes prior, and take the niacin with a meal. One aspirin a day won’t throw off your anti-coagulant-even Coumadin. Don’t get all bent out of shape, OB. It’s not her fault you had a stronger reaction to the Niaspan than most. I would bump up from a
Baby aspirin to a full strength, and skip your normal dose you probably take every morning. Chill out.

  3. Ann Onimous says:

While I can understand your post, OB, please remember that not all nurse practitioners are bad. I have one that I owe my world to, because she helped save the lives of my husband and my daughter. None of us would go see anyone else. We’ve now followed her to three different locations: if she were to move to the other side of the county, we;d follow her there as well.

I’ve nothing against nurse-practitioners. When the law was passed, the testimony was they would be used mostly in rural areas where doctors are not readily available. But, I think my physician should sign off on any prescriptions to indicate that she did converse with him.

Ann, I was a corpsman in the Navy during Viet Nam. We were trained to do lots of things including surgery….appendectomy, tonsillectomy, etc. We could suture wounds and give narcotics and other prescriptions as necessary. I have a reasonably good idea of the value of a nurse practitioner. There is certainly a place, even in a hospital setting for them to help take the load off the physician in routine cases.

    Morning!

Sorry about your reaction OB. Niaspan is just niacin. My doc wanted me to take niacin. I turn bright red, sweat and get agitated. It wears of after two hours but during that time I feel like I’m going to crawl out of my skin. Then I found out that niacin also comes in a no flush formula. We finally settled on Crestor 5 mg every other day. That did the trick for me.

  5. parrotmom says:

Good morning, had a restless night like most of them. I only get a few hours sleep was up at 8:00 in time to watch the sequel “How the West was Won” with James Arness.

I have had personal friends prescribed Niacin and have read many records. This medication causes severe reactions to everyone. Anything from flushes (hot flashes), the description you describe AW and OB. Most people will not take it. The NP telling you to take the aspirin was to offset the reactions which does not work most of the time from what I have read. Numerous persons decide just to take over the counter niacin which may not be as strong but does not have the side affects. I wished your pharmacist would have given you some warnings.

  6. parrotmom says:

Since we were up early will not be able to leave home before 11:30 at the earliest to be sure and give PD his meds and formula first.

I hope Coop has luck with her phone and everyone have a wonderful Saturday. Oh, yes Barb I hope you catch up on some interesting gossip at work.

  7. Legal Eagle says:

Unfortunately, the VA relies on nurse practitioners instead of doctors. I don’t think BE has seen a real doctor in 3 or 4 years and that’s ridiculous. Doctors in the U.S. don’t get enough training, much less turning things over to nurse practitioners. That would be like me representing someone in a personal injury lawsuit.

  8. Legal Eagle says:

If practicing law without a license is against the law, practicing medicine without a license should certainly be even more against the law.

    • Clucky says:

Leagle, you better check yourself before you wreck yourself. BE is probably better off with a NP. besides, without FNP’s, vets would wait MONTHS for an appointment. I remember my dad going to VA for an appointment and taking all day for a 15 minute visit. The vets I work with are now able to get in and out, and get appts for illnesses immediately. Not trying to get on a soapbox here, but we, ALL nurses, fought hard to get where we are now. Medicare reimbursements have dropped so low that most clinics can’t afford more than one physician. I got the bill today-from 3/19/10-from Medicare re:Mom’s last hospital visit. For a $600 CT scan bill, they paid about $90. I cannot believe it took this long for them to send the EOB. It was a kick in the gut after the last two weeks.

Today hasn’t been an easy day.

      • Legal Eagle says:

Cluckster, I have a great respect for nurses. What I was saying was that the VA has a vast shortage of doctors that they say is because of the war. I know you do wonders for your patients and I respect that.

I took a lot of pride in the legal work I did which went from interviewing clients, drafting pleadings, filing pleadings and studying to learn as much as I could about my profession. Without a good support staff, attorneys couldn’t serve their clients nearly as well as they do.

My comment was in no way a put down on nurses or support staff for professionals at all. And I agree that if anything happened to go wrong, we would have been the ones to ultimately pay the price. I hope you know I love and respect you and your profession.

  9. Barb says:

Well my morning started off with a bang…literally!! Mother slipped off the couch and hit her head on the coffee table. She is in the er and says she is okay. My car won’t start so am now waiting for my n-in-law to bring me Mother’s car keys. Please pray that she really is okay, please?

  10. dhcoop says:

    Barb, I certainly will!

Well, I forgot to disable the computer’s “sleep” mode and my download didn’t complete because the computer shut itself off. ARGGG! Now I have to start the process over.

FYI, if anyone is looking for me, be aware I can’t take calls while this is downloading.

  11. parrotmom says:

Barb prayers for you in your mother.

It is hot, hot outside. Our temp here is 99 degrees. Heading to the office to get some work done without phones ringing. Wish me luck only 50 to go to 0 is my goal.

  12. dhcoop says:

Well, poo. Still didn’t work. I guess if I’m going to get an upgrade, I’m going to have to take the phone to an ATT store. Bummer.

  13. dhcoop says:

Anybody ever seen Billy the Exterminator? I stumbled across it and am actually enjoying it.

  14. Legal Eagle says:

Barb, I hope your mom is ok.

  15. Airwolf says:

    Prayers for your mom Barb!

  16. pncpnthr says:

Cub just left taking my Grandmother’s dresser to it’s new home. I’m so thankful he has a love for antiques.

  17. parrotmom says:

stayed about 4 1/2 hrs went from 52 to 9. Not to bad. I think I will stay home tomorrow. Knowing certain folks I will probably be back at 50 by Tuesday. I hope everyone has a nice evening.

  18. parrotmom says:

I finally had a lunch today. Arby’s beef and cheddar was pretty good.

  19. Clucky says:

OB, I replied to your post above. A FNP saved my life-a young one even. Even tho I’m not a nurse practitioner, I’ve saved a couple myself. Please understand if I get my britches in a bunch if anyone starts picking on nurses of any kind. The nurses catch Hell for doing what the doctor orders, but never gets the praise for the good-the doctors are the geniuses. Yeah, whatever. A doctor is only as good as the nurse following his orders. Competent nurses will save your life when a distracted doc writes an order for the wrong med or the wrong dose. Nurses HAVE to know more about the drugs the doc orders than the docs do, because if the nurse gives EXACTLY what the doc ordered, even if it’s wrong, the NURSE loses their job, gets sued, etc., and the doc doesn’t even get “bothered” with it.

Emotions are still more than a little raw. Work was hell this week too. God, why couldn’t you make me rich instead of intelligent? My tolerance for intolerance and incompetence are NIL.

Headed south, finally. Maybe some sand between my toes will restore my patience.

  20. parrotmom says:

we’ve been getting some rain and lots of thunder. Took out our Dish Network on the last 10 minutes of “The Dead Man’s Gun”. Wouldn’t you know it is one we haven’t seen before :(

  21. parrotmom says:

I noticed my sump pump in the courtyard was not working so I went out to check on it. The float was up so I put my hand to it and received a nice gentle vibration. Ha, I think I was shocked. I will check on it once the rain stops and the pit has drained out.

  22. msblondie says:

hey gang.. been a busy day

Got up early and went help my sister get her computers set up in her class room. The school district techs wouldn’t/couldn’t do it. 2 hours and I was done. Afterwards hubby and I went to the movies – saw Planet of the Apes (very good) and Cowboys and Aliens (good – different). Then office depot to finish the girls school supply shopping. Stopped at Denny’s for Breakfast (supper). Been a great day.

Everyone have a great weekend.. gonna just chill.

  23. Barb says:

Thank you all for the prayers…they worked!!! Mother’s CT scan was clear except for the scar from the stroke she had when I was 6 days old. They are keeping her overnight to be sure and will release her tomorrow, barring some unforeseen happening. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!

  24. Legal Eagle says:

    Good news, Barb!

  25. Mrs. H says:

    Morning, folks.
    HAPPY BIRTHDAY, PREACHER-BOY!!!
    7:56 a.m.

  26. Mrs. H says:

Yesterday we had surprise visitors: our best man (29 years ago) and all his family and soon to be family. They traveled from Oregon with their 25 year old son and his girl friend (from Croatia), their almost 20 year old daughter and her fiance’ (soon to be in the Army) and their 18 year old son. There must have been a ton of luggage on top of that van!!

They are staying in Fairhope, AL, for a few days. I think his wife’s family is from there, so we’re driving over to see them this afternoon after church. They are one of those families that we just pick up where we left off the last time we saw them. : )
