I’ve lived in Mississippi for nearly 16 years. I live here by choice. It’s a colorful place full of interesting people and fantastic stories. But I don’t have my head in the sand. I know there are problems. I’ve been commenting on them since my third day of living here.
That said, the Governor of North Carolina launched a major cheap shot against the people of this state. She painted every single person with the same broad brush. I know better. I’ve met the good people who are working hard to make this a better place for my boys to live. So I think the best way to respond to her would be a phrase my grandmother perfected oh so well:
Bless her heart.
Well said.
Amen!
Amen and well said!!! I came back to Mississippi for retirement after being gone for 27 years.
Good one, Marshall.
This situation reminds me of Matthew 5:44 in the Holy Bible, King James Version (KJV)
44 But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;
Very well said!
Mississippi passed its ban on same-sex marriage by a greater margin than any other state—86% to 14%. Gov. Perdue correctly thought that this made us come off like right-wing hatemongers, and didn’t want North Carolina to suffer the same fate.
Phil Bryant has misrepresented her remark as a general slam on Mississippi, and you’ve followed suit. This tells me nothing about your opinion re: Mississippi. It does tell me something about your opinion re: the appropriateness of anti-gay constitutional referenda, and I’m disappointed.
I’m sorry you feel that way, Tom.
Amen to that. I was born and reared in Mississippi and after living in two different states for a while, I was glad to get back home.
You know I love you Marshall, but I respect you so much more with this observation. I too have lived in other places (5 states & abroad) and I am always amazed at the misconceptions people have about our state and our people. I live here because I want to live here, I work her (teacher) because I want to help our children, and I will continue to give credit for the incredible love we have for each other. As my grandmother often said, “Be careful what you say & do it reveals your heart. “So definitely … God Bless her heart.”
This is much ado about nothing. “Major cheap shot”? It’s a wonder the state got mentioned at all. I can remember when the country went from Alabama to Louisiana, with not a mention of Mississippi because it was the most dangerous place to be. (Yes, and that is also the truth.) Besides, Gov. Perdue was right: If it’s something negative or unhealthy, then Mississippi has proven itself to be the high scorer – and immediately comes to mind. Our state officials must be taking marketing classes; trying to lure unsuspecting tourists here to boost the budget. Get over it. Move on.
Thanks for your comment.
Every person the FBI has sent down here from up NORTH, has stayed. Wonder why, could it be the good people in Mississippi?
I love my Mississippi heritage and keep my kids aware of it so that we know what we love and what we don’t want to repeat. My children have discovered far more racism and social intolerance outside of the south than here at home and at the hands of liberals. They love their Black friends, teammates, and teachers. Homosexual teachers have taught them patience and joy. People who aren’t from Mississippi just fail to realize that “Folks is folks.” Lord love ’em.
Gov Perdue need only look one state south of her poor misguided voters in North Carolina. Her country cousins in South Carolina voted 78% in 2006 in favor of an Amendment to ban same sex marriage. Thirty other states have done the same.
Picking on Mississippi is a liberal’s favorite recreation. Watching those on the left sweat out the 2012 election is mine.
If voting to ban same sex marriages causes incorrigible remarks about our great state of MS, bring it on. Voting to uphold the Holy Bible that clearly states in Genesis as well as Matthews that a man and woman will leave their father and mother and will be as one as husband and wife. If an elected official of NC wants to take a cheap shot at that, it’s good she is not running for re-election. MS’s record of people who prefer to live here will equal NC’s record any day. I am very proud of our Great State of Ms!
Amen, Marshall!
I, like you, have emigrated from another state…Texas. And make no mistake, I love my Texas and am proud of my family history that goes way back to before and during the battle of the Alamo. I’ve lived here for 13 years, and was an outsider like so many others, having a warped view of what Mississippi really is, from bad propaganda. Now, I know that this great state, though needing improvement as do all states, has some of the BEST people in the country…make that, the world, that have been born, bred and raised here. Some even move here from other places. And when outsiders make judgmental comments without truly knowing about that which they condemn, I say, “let them wallow in there ignorance, for then, the secret of our wonderful state and excellent people will remain safely kept, and its terrain unpolluted by their invasion.” This country is a better place because of the contributions of Mississippians.
Wow! Tracy very well said! I couldn’t agree more with your comments. Thank you for them and thank you Marshall for yours as well!
