9/11 And the flag was still there…

I drew this in the time between the Towers falling. It was my first cartoon of 9/11.

Daily Log 9/10/11

Nine. Ten. Eleven.  Just noticed that.  I guess that means my brain is finally waking up.

Another project landed in my lap yesterday. Praise the Lord. Work is a blessing and I want all the blessings I can handle.  This will be a fun one — I will be doing 20 coloring sheets for my cousin’s childrens’ division.  I love drawing Junior.  I have a lot of love ahead of me.

Got a good lesson on forgiveness and letting go this morning.  It’s OK to be angry.  But to remain angry hurts no one but yourself. The more time you spend obsessing about a past hurt, the less time you have moving past it to something better.  As the old cliche says, “Success is the best revenge.” And no, I’m not preaching. I’m talking to myself.

It has been a very lazy morning so far. Read an interesting article.  Talked to a friend.  Updated my blog. And now I’m watching State vs. Auburn.  I’m trying to unwind after another very busy week.  By the time Friday rolls around, I’m ready for a day to recover.

The radio show is getting better.  Every day there are parts that are very, very good. The next trick is tie everything together. The bottom line? I’m learning something every day.  And that is a good thing.

Now to write something.  And watch a little football.

911 Ten years later

A little more cynical view of how divided we have become. The only thing that keeps me from totally becoming cynical is that I know that when things get bad, we pull together. I saw it first hand after Hurricane Katrina.

Saturday Free-For-All

I don’t have an alarm clock. I have three boys who fight.

How are you this morning?

Never forget

The man on the news told him to never forget.

Never forget.

How could he?  He could still hear the whine of the engines as the planes accelerated into the World Trade Center.  He could see the black smoke against the deep blue sky.  And the people trying to escape the fires by hanging out of the windows. He was haunted by the sound of the jumpers when they hit the ground. And the roar of the collapsing Towers.

Never forget.

He remembered the funerals.  The brave souls from the fire department who ran into the burning towers while everyone else was running away.  The police who died from the falling debris. The EMTs who risked it all to take care of the wounded.

Never forget.

He could still see the billowing clouds of dust engulf lower Manhattan. He thought of the first responders mysteriously dying of cancer. He still saw the faces on the missing posters when he slept.

Never forget.

He thought of the victims at the Pentagon.  Its proud side with a gaping, burned-out hole. He then thought of the heroes on Flight 93 who were the first to fight back against the terrorists. Let’s roll.

Never forget.

He stood in the park with the candle. He sang “God Bless America” while holding hands with a stranger.  The outpouring of support from around the nation. The charity. The respect for public servants. He wrote a check to help a total stranger.

Never forget.

He remembered the moment when he heard that the mastermind of that dark day had been dispatched to Hell. The relief. The moment of joy. And then sadness for all that been lost because of his evil.

Never forget.

This Sunday, he wouldn’t need to be told to remember. He could by just closing his eyes. September 11th was seared into his mind and into his heart. He was an American.

And he could never forget.

9/11 We’re coming after you

It took nearly 10 years, but this came true.

9/11 Lady Liberty

The newsroom was scrambling.  The second tower had just crashed to Earth and I had to have an idea.  No dice. I wanted to be with my family, not stuck in a newsroom.  The world was ending — or so it seemed.  I said a quick plea for guidance and then the iconic shot of the Statue of Liberty standing in front of the smoke came on TV. I drew this cartoon in 3o minutes. But what I love about it 10 years later is the silver lining on the black cloud. I didn’t mean to draw it on that day — who could have seen the good that would happen. We came together as a country. Fireman and Police in NY showed us what true heroes really are.  We thought of others instead of ourselves. Pure evil brought out the good in us.  This is my third all-time favorite cartoon that I’ve done.

9/11 United We Stand

I’ll be posting my 9/11 cartoons over the next three days. This is my all-time favorite cartoon. It was drawn two days after 9/11.  It took six hours to draw and was part of my first Pultizer-Finalist portfolio.
