A dog’s advice on this first day of December

Banjo the dog and I are sitting here, drinking a cup of hot tea (he does pretty well holding a cup for not having opposable thumbs) and carrying on a discussion about what we’ve learned from the last month.  We’ve both had a rough month — my job status changed and he lost his soul-mate Molly the dog.  He gave me some really good advice and I thought I’d share his words with you.

1. Always be positive.  A dog that wags his tail gets more pets than a growling one.

2. Blaming yourself for something you had no control over is as fruitless as chasing your tail.

3. Always bury a few bones for a rainy day.

4. Your real friends are the ones who still will pet you when you roll in crap.

5. Just because someone puts a collar on you doesn’t mean they own you.

6. Cherish the moment. The treat. The nap. The walk. The scratch behind the ear.

7. If you want friends, be a friend.  How do I know this? I’m man’s best friend aren’t I?

8. Always be excited when someone you care about comes home. Greet them accordingly. When they leave, act like it is the biggest tragedy ever.

9. Fiercely protect your territory. Your people. Your pack.

10. Happiness may or not be a warm puppy, but it works for me.

THANK YOU for stopping by!

Just checked the numbers for marshallramsey.com and I just wanted to pause and say thank you. I’m blown away by the number of people who are stopping in to my little neighborhood to look around.  I appreciate your visiting and make this promise to you — this will become bigger and better as the days and months progress. You’ll see more artwork, funnier writing and more stuff to give you a lift on a down day.  This is your place as much as mine and I’m glad to be able to share it with you.

Now get back to work. Or Farmville. Or Amazon.com — or whatever you do at work!

Wednesday Morning Links: News and other mayhem

This post is brought to you by CAFFEINE. CAFFEINE — stimulating mankind since the very beginning.

Good morning.  OK, I didn’t hear you… let’s try that again. GOOD MORNING!  Much better. Me?  I’m caffeinated and ready to do.  So let’s see that’s going on out there (I have no idea at this point myself.)

Weather: Cold as a Frosty’s butt.  It’s freezing as I type this and will be 53 for a high. But sunny. And no hook echos or rotation anywhere in the state.

Wednesday Free-For-All: Discussion and whatnot.

SCROOGE 2010: Two million to lose jobless benefits as the Holidays arrive. Extended unemployment benefits run out this Wednesday.

Challenge to Obamacare dismissed by Virginia judge. Haley Barbour just spit his drink out across the room.

Speaking of the Guv: Haley has declared a State of emergency after Monday night’s tornadoes.  Here’s a photo gallery of Yazoo City damage.

The Cellular South Conerly Trophey winner isMSU’s Chris White.

Dan Mullen job watch: There is no truth he will be the next cartoonist for The Clarion-Ledger.

STAR TREK sequel is being written by writers. Just thought you were worried.

YAHOO’s 10-ten most searched subjects for 2010.  Apparently OIL SPILL was one of them — I bet NAKED OIL SPILL ranked even higher.

A word from my sponsor: And thank you for flying DUMBASS AIR.

Now to go get the kids ready for school.

Fireproof

I looked up the soot covered steps and could see the sky.  Fire had burned a sunroof into their home.   My friends guessed that’s where the lightning hit. Their lives changed in a flash.  And a boom. Their house was a charred ruin.

Thankfully they made it outside.  Unfortunately, not many of their possessions made it with them. But their family was safe. And so was the family dog.  That’s all that matters in the scheme of things.

They had friends and family helping them — an army built on love.  Sure, they lost their possessions, but what really mattered in their lives was totally fireproof.  (Wasn’t that a movie?).   They had people who care.  And no flames on the Earth can touch that.

Tuesday Morning Links: News and other stuff

Son of a twister, last night was rough. Well, I say last night — as I type this, tornado warnings are still firing up in east Mississippi.  The weatherfolks must be exhausted after their on-airathon last night.  As the sun comes up, we’ll know more about what damage is out there but this much is known: Yazoo City has a “kick me” sign taped to their back.  And CNN is reporting six have been taken to the hospital. Prayers go out to all the affected and injured.  Like I said last night, Mississippi weather is like combat: Long periods of boredom accented by moments of sheer terror.

Today’s weather: Rain to start off with, followed by clearing and a hi of 56.  The rest of the week looks much better.

Link to the Tuesday Free-for-all.

In other news:

Speaking of spinning, destructive windbags: North Korea threatens all out-war. The WikiLeaks documents show that China is weary of them “acting like a spoiled child” and it doesn’t know as much about N. Korea as we thought. And the US and South Korea are wondering what happens when the country totally collapses. And that was a really awkward sentence because it is 5:30 a.m.

Standoff ended: The 23 hostages in Wisconsin school are safe after the 15-year-old gunman holding them shot himself when police stormed the building.  The students apparently talked to him to keep him calm.

Another day, another vitamin study to refute the claims of its supporters: Today’s is – Vitamin D. We need a little more but not a lot.  OK. Guess I should put away my Vitamin D suppositories.

Grin and Black Bear it: Houston Nutt goes 4-8 after a Cotton Bowl win, gets a raise plus extension and now evaluates coaching staffDavid Cutcliffe reacts.

Bowl predictions: For what it’s worth, here are CBS’s predictions of who will go where.  Looks like State fan may be having a Chick-fil-A sandwich.

Entertainment: The director of the best Star Wars film dies.  Don’t worry, George Lucas is perfectly safe.  And in the “Neckties cut blood off to the brain” department, Johnny Depp said the executives at Disney hated his Capt. Jack Sparrow.

Tornado tweets

Because I believe laughter diminishes what scares you. From my Twitter account:

  1. On the serious side, thinking about everyone affected by the tornadoes tonight.
  2. On the plus side, I no longer have to rake my yard.
  3. Either the North Koreans are shelling my neighborhood, or another storm is rolling in.
  4. @BARBIEBASSETT Just remember, if you save one life, it is worth all the people calling up to complain. But you know that.
  5. Tornadoes are bad enough. I just found out McRib is
  6. Yazoo City has to be shaking their fist at the sky.
  7. @ChuckJr @BARBIEBASSETT People complain until they hear their street name.
  8. Of course I follow Jim Cantore. A. I’m a fan. B. I know where he is all the time in case I need to flee.
  9. Good job to all the local weather folks. Been flipping around and everyone is doing a good job.
  10. I can handle the tornado warnings better than the toilet paper TV ad with a bear crapping on a toilet.
  11. My good friend Barbie said “booger” tonight. Love that.
  12. Tonight’s tornado drinking game: Every time they say “rotation!”– drink.
  13. Two words I hate hearing in the same sentence: My street name and “rotation.”
  14. Weather in Mississippi is like combat: Long periods of boredom accented my moments of sheer terror.
  15. The only positive from Tornadopalooza 2010 is that I’m getting a quality Mississippi geography lesson.
  16. Nothing says “Merry Christmas” like a tornado siren.
